About this deal

The team studied the FBI pair for a day and a half. The similarities were obvious. “I would say it was after a little over an hour, we were just looking and we see all the consistencies,” Wallace says. “Everything started to line up.” That included clear glass beads painted red on both shoes, a detail she believed was not widely known. Contemporary Designers Re-Imagine Dorothy's Ruby Slippers For Charity". Access Hollywood. June 10, 2009 . Retrieved April 21, 2010. Stills from The Wizard of Oz and a mural featuring bright red poppies created by the Washington, D.C. art and design firm No Kings Collective covers the walls. The museum’s pair of Ruby Slippers is one of four from the film’s production known to have survived. Another one of those pairs disappeared from the Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, in 2005. Those were the shoes the FBI recently called about.

I first heard about Ruby Red Shoes when I was wrapping up the 2014 Readings Children’s Book Prize (where its sequel was shortlisted). It certainly looked beautiful, but at the time neither the original or its sequel were easily found in my local bookshops or department stores, so I filed it away in the ‘nice to read it if I ever find it’ part of my mind. During the fall 2008 New York Fashion Week, the Swarovski company held a charity contest to commemorate the seventieth anniversary of the film, with nineteen designers redesigning the ruby slippers, including Gwen Stefani, Diane von Fürstenberg, and Moschino. [31] [32] [33] The "Arabian" design was displayed with the designer entries. The Twigseeds band of furry and feathery friends have grown a following of both children and grown-ups alike. They have appeared in books, magazines, art prints, greeting cards, stationery, plush toys and bed linen.

The writing style of "Ruby Red Shoes" is also noteworthy. Kate Knapp's prose is poetic and lyrical, with a gentle rhythm that flows beautifully throughout the book. The language is simple and accessible, making it suitable for young readers, while also conveying important messages about empathy, kindness, and the appreciation of nature. Brooks, Jennifer (October 18, 2016). "What a world, what a world: Ruby slippers still missing from Minnesota's Judy Garland Museum". Star Tribune . Retrieved October 20, 2016. The slippers have a new home in a large gallery meant to evoke Emerald City. Quotes and stills from The Wizard of Oz and a mural featuring bright red poppies created by the Washington, D.C. art and design firm No Kings Collective covers the walls. Additional artifacts from the film are on display—the Scarecrow’s hat, which actor Ray Bolger’s wife donated to the Smithsonian in 1987, and a wand used by Billie Burke, who played Glinda the Good Witch of the North, in promotional materials for the film. “We’ve connected with people who care about the film, who have some of the other props from the film,” says Ryan Lintelman, curator of entertainment at the museum. “That whole community of Oz fans, we really want to keep them engaged here and be this pilgrimage place for them.”

This is an incredibly calming book. The illustrations are soft and pretty with lots of gentle curves and the text is full of comforting words and phrases like ‘warm and cosy’ and ‘places to drift off and snooze’. My particular favourite paragraph talks about the caravan Ruby and her grandmother share and how it’s full of things they love: It turned out that the stolen pair is the mismatched twin of the Smithsonian pair. But given inconsistencies between the two pairs, Thomas believes the mix-up happened at the time they were made, not after filming, as others have speculated. Nabs Pair of Dorothy's Ruby Slippers". Smithsonian.com. Smithsonian Institution . Retrieved 4 September 2018. For many years, movie studios were careless with old props, costumes, scripts, and other materials, unaware of or indifferent to their increasing value as memorabilia. [17] Often, workers would just keep them as souvenirs without permission, aware that their employers did not particularly care. [17] One of the more notorious of these was costumer Kent Warner, who amassed a large private collection and supplemented his income with sales. It was he who found the slippers in February or March 1970 while helping to set up a mammoth auction of MGM props and wardrobe. [9] They had been stored and forgotten in the basement of MGM's wardrobe department. One pair became the centerpiece of the auction. Warner kept the best pair for himself, size 5B, [14] and apparently sold the rest. [7] An original pair on display at the Smithsonian Institution. For next year, designers have presented a range of shoe trends, including, but not limited to, a continuation of Mary Janes and styles finished in rich ruby red that echo the season's defining colour. I'll admit, 90% of the shoe trends for 2024 aren't exactly practical either—there are bows, fragile heels, and soft fabrications to eat up. But they are fun, and will bring joy to even your most basic outfits. However, if comfort really is your main concern, rest assured there is a shoe waiting for you. The last known pair may have been made for Bobbie Koshay, Garland's stunt double. [15] This is most likely the size 6B pair (owned first by Roberta Bauman, then Anthony Landini, and currently by David Elkouby) whose lining says "Double" instead of "Judy Garland". However, some believe this pair may have been the second pair created, therefore explaining the "Double" in the lining, but still worn by Garland and Koshay. [16] Several pairs of Garland's own shoes are size 6 1⁄ 2. Also, Garland can be seen wearing this pair in photos taken after the film's primary shooting was finished in 1939.
