About this deal

At the age of eighteen she married George Metalious (1925-2015) who came from a Greek family. The couple had three children. After World War II army service, George became a teacher, but Grace wasn’t the perfect faculty wife and displayed rebellious tendencies. Several characters and events were drawn from events in nearby towns and people that Metalious actually knew. Selena Cross was based on Barbara Roberts, a 20-year-old girl from the village of Gilmanton Ironworks, who murdered her father Sylvester after years of sexual abuse and buried his body under a sheep pen. In the novel, Selena kills her stepfather because incest was considered too taboo for readers at the time. Metalious' editor Kitty Messner made the change, much to the author's dismay and disapproval. [5] Plot [ edit ] For Grace, writing was like breathing; she needed to do it to stay alive. For his part, her husband resented her need to write and blatant nonconformity.A daytime soap opera titled Return to Peyton Place ran from 1972 to 1974, and the franchise had two made-for-television movies: Murder in Peyton Place and Peyton Place: The Next Generation in 1977 and 1985 respectively. This is the main scumbag of the novel speaking to his stepdaughter. The publishers made Grace change the character into a stepfather. The people of Gilmanton felt victimized by Peyton Place, but it was Grace Metalious who was the book’s real victim. Grace Metalious

The book’s massive success coincided with the end of Grace’s marriage and a tough time for her children who were taunted and shunned. Locals were outraged at what they perceived as having their dirty linen aired in public. She insisted Peyton Place was based on several places in New Hampshire – including Durham, where her husband attended the University of New Hampshire; Gilmanton, where he taught school; and Laconia, where her favorite bar was located. Peyton Place, The Book The Tight White Collar (1960) and No Adam in Eden (1963) failed to have the same impact, though they have been the subjects of contemporary reconsideration. The 'Peyton Place' Murder by Renee Mallett is a highly recommended examination of author Grace Metalious and the murder that influenced her scandalous book Peyton Place. Other storylines follow Leslie Harrington, owner of the local woolen mills, whose son Rodney dies in a car accident, as well as newspaper man Seth Buswell.
