The hemp provides the full sound and the maple provides the balanced sound. By working together both kinds of wood lead to a blended sound that doesn’t feel or sound like any one instrument or portion of a song is competing with one another. Even as long-term Grado users, it takes us a while to get used to them due to their thinness and overall shape, but it’s worth persisting. A few days of acclimatisation makes us more kindly disposed towards them, particularly as the new earpads cause a subtle shift to the balance of the SR325x’s sound, making them a less demanding listen.

Speaking of crude, we tee up Eminem’s Killshot and his biting delivery sounds as impassioned as we’ve heard it out of two earcups. These are significantly more expensive than the other pads. Well, they are the most comfortable pads of the bunch. Putting these on gives a vast soundstage, but introduces the much-maligned 5k-6k treble spike. This is the EQers pad, as using this pad to EQ will allow a wider range of tweaking than with the other pads. The reason is, the Bass is substantial, the upper Bass/low Mids are not missing, and the rest of the Mids are nicely detailed. The Treble has good presence, plenty of micro-detail, and yet is not shrill, or etched. The GH4 is the ultimate refinement of the traditional Grado house sound, but won't pierce your ears with treble like the non-EQ Statement models, and I bought the GH4 over every other x-series model, including the flagship GS3000x. The GH4 is now discontinued and difficult to find, but I'd take it over the Hemp every time, and it doesn't cost that much more. You can always muffle the brighter GH4 sound with different pads, but you can't make the Hemp as clear as the GH4 without EQ.
