From the hall she could see, through the open door of the front room, her mother deep in conversation with Heinrich von Kessel, who had been a Social Democrat city councilor with her after the war. As usual, Ken Follet has written a truly excellent and very readable book which I throughly recommend. Sadly, though it gets off to a good start, Edge of Eternity fizzles fast, becoming repetitive and predictable. I have learnt so much from this book about history and in particular, history from another perspective. Well that only makes sense from these characters, finally seeing a black president is something they thought would never happen.

They had been strolling in the People’s Park at Friedrichshain, and they had stopped in front of the old Fairy Tale Fountain to look at the carved stone turtles. And out of the 3 this one I could most relate to, because I was born in 1959,and the things happening in it up to 2008, I saw on the news. George is mixed-race; his father is the white US Senator Greg Peshkov and his mother is the African-American actor Jacky Jakes with whom Greg had an affair. Rebecca stared hard at Hans, watching for his reaction to her surmise, hoping he would laugh it off and immediately come out with the true, innocent explanation.Outside, two passersby stopped to watch, and a neighbor appeared on a doorstep, gazing in fascination.

For the scene, Follett has all of the black characters, who have fought so hard for civil rights throughout the first part of the book, all in one room watching the whole thing. Every incident was drawn from what could have been a pleasant story into a long, over-detailed story.

If you have a chance to get the British paperback version, it has memories in the end of people that lived through the different decades. It is a substantial and compelling read covering more than fifty years of recent history offering a detailed and authentic account of world events as they could have been seen by those in positions near those in power.

No letting off from his left leaning, wo is me/the poor people view either but overall I enjoyed it tho it left me flat and thinking I was glad the long haul was over! None such for the Gipper, but I think part of that is that the story starts to go off the rails a bit in the 80's. Indeed, Follett obviously showcases his considered opinion that there is no place in a compassionate world for the far right.

Follett concentrated on the bleakest aspects of the 1960’s and later, which were depressing reminders of those turbulent times that we endured…assassinations, segregation, civil unrest, communism, drugs, and “free love. Dave Williams, the son of Lloyd Williams and Daisy Peshkov and grandson of Earl Fitzherbert; first cousin of George and second cousin of Walli, a dyslexic young musician who become an international rock star and music producer. It is so evident that the decision-making men tare usually making decisions that involve their ego or re-election.
