About this deal

Although the story sometimes got a chuckle out of me (Moore is often very funny), I just wanted to get on to the next story. What can we uncover, Moore wants us to ask, when we examine the hidden underworld of the American comics industry, zooming in on each detail with the same uncomfortable discernment Watchmen brings to bear on the conventions of silver age comics?

Which means that Moore can tell every outrageous comics anecdote, really stick the boot in, and get away with it.I expect people with an emotional investment in superhero culture as it currently stands will find this story mean-spirited and bitter. They tell you when something is too much, they force you to pick words carefully, and they help pare down your stories so that you tell the story you want to tell. What We Can Know About Thunderman may be said to offer a similar deconstruction of the American comics industry itself.

Yes, anyone who read 1963, or the backmatter in the last LoEG, knows that Moore has a nicely savage line in Stan Lee pastiche, and the secret history of Hollywood in Cinema Purgatorio* showed that to some extent he can turn media muckraking into art – but that was one story in an anthology, not a whole damn novel. Superhero fandoms of both the political right and the political left now enjoy a rare moment of unity in summarily rejecting Moore's fascism thesis, while observers point out that Moore has been claiming this for years—since, in fact, his earliest works in the genre, Miracleman and Watchmen.

America’s “post-truth” departure from factual objectivity, in other words, is a consequence of its near wholesale embrace of the fascist mythology that reality can become whatever one has the will to make of it – a mythology endlessly rearticulated within mainstream corporate superhero fantasies and reactionary political subcultures. some of which cry out for an artist to translate into comic one-offs, but sadly Alan is done with that now. Hotjar sets this cookie to know whether a user is included in the data sampling defined by the site's daily session limit. Novella' is a term whose definition has become increasingly elastic of late – I always thought Gatsby was one of the key contenders for the Great American Novel, but apparently by the new definitions it's a Great American Novella.
