About this deal

Published in 1968, A Necklace of Raindrops was the first of several wonderful collaborations between Jan and Joan Aiken - and it was also the very first book Jan illustrated. Meg and Mog are the heroes of a series of children"s books written by Helen Nicoll and illustrated by Jan Pienkowski. Luckily Meg’s spell to save them works fairly well but the dinosaurs are so small that she needs a magnifying glass to see them!

After creating his first book at the age of eight, Jan went on to excel in his chosen field of design, working in such diverse areas as television, theatre and greetings cards. Item despatched quickly and as described, but damaged in transit due to plastic wrap packaging being inadequate protection. Helen Nicoll worked with Jan Pienkowski for over forty years, first at the BBC and then on the Meg and Mog stories. Meg’s spells continue to surprise her and the eggs she makes for supper are even more strange than usual. It also stimulated a discussion about dinosaurs, what they eat, what their teeth look like and the difference between herbivores and carnivores. The story is full of bright colours and shapes and is perfect for a language focus on colours, shapes, food, animals or halloween.

Meg’s Eggs is a fun story that will appeal to toddlers and preschoolers but is also a great book for preschoolers and developing readers. A car is all very well if you know how to drive it, but if you're Meg or Mog, in a hurry to go on a picnic, you really are safer on a broomstick. The books are wonderful, interactive in a variety of ways, are inclusive/diverse with a variety of subjects. Meg’s spell to save them from being eaten by the Tyrannosaurus causes all three dinosaurs to shrink. Reading Meg’s Eggs has led to discussions about eggs hatching and discovering which animals and birds come out of eggs.

Stegosaurus and Diplodocus have cute, friendly expressions but Tyrannosaurus is fierce with a mouthful of sharp teeth. The illustrations on the double spreads are colourful, bold and humorous and will appeal to toddlers who will enjoy the board book version.I enjoyed reading the Meg and Mog stories as a child and had several in the book box in my first classroom. My daughter laughs when Meg’s spells go wrong, first the eggs are too big then the dinosaurs shrink to mouse size.
