About this deal

Wainwright was a supporter of animal rights and explained that the publisher of his books gave most of the profits from his books to animal charities. [7] In 1972 he became chairman of Animal Rescue Cumbria, and donated enough money to enable the foundation in 1984 of Kapellan, a shelter for stray cats and dogs in Kendal. After his death the society was renamed "Animal Rescue Cumbria – The Wainwright Shelter". [28] A walk can be what you make it – you can walk the dog, walk the kids to school or simply go for a walk in your lunch break; whatever it is you’re always winning. For those who want to add that little bit more; a slightly more strenuous, time-consuming adventure, Alfred Wainwright has done the hard work for you. All you have to do is walk. It’s possible to avoid some of the scramblings on the Hall’s Fell route, and the views across The Dodds towards Helvellyn from the summit are reward enough to keep you motivated.

Alfred Wainwright listed Blencathra in his top six favourite mountains and, in particular, the Sharp Edge approach. “Blencathra,” he wrote, “is one of the grandest objects in Lakeland… This is a mountain that compels attention, even from those dull people whose eyes are not habitually lifted to the hills.” Part of the Southern Fells, Glaramara is a tranquil hill despite being in the midst of some of the Lake District’s busiest hotspots such as Ullswater and Borrowdale. A more challenging route goes from Patterdale going along the lower part of Link Cove and then surmounting Greenhow End and The Step. Worth noting: this is definitely more of a climb than a walk! 6. Helm Crag Uney is now close to completing his sixth full round of the Wainwrights and has a wealth of experience of the Lakeland fells, having spent five years as one of the national park’s winter felltop assessors, making the ascent of Helvellyn more than 600 times. He also runs numerous courses as a mountain instructor and provides guided walks in the area and lives on the eastern fringes of the national park.

The Wainwright Guides – A Third Edition of the Walks". wainwrightguides.co.uk. 21 February 2014 . Retrieved 6 April 2014. Between 2005 and 2009, all the Pictorial Guides were updated for the first time, to take account of changed conditions on the fells. The revisions were made by Chris Jesty, and the publishers used an imitation font of Wainwright's hand lettering to make the alterations look as unobtrusive as possible. The most notable changes were the inclusion of photographs of the Lake District by Derry Brabbs on the front covers, rather than the drawings that were on the covers of the originals, and footpaths shown in red on the maps. These revised versions are titled 'Second Editions'. Revised editions of Wainwright's other Pictorial Guides, A Coast to Coast Walk, The Outlying Fells of Lakeland, Pennine Way Companion, Walks in Limestone Country and Walks on the Howgill Fells were published by Frances Lincoln between 2010 and 2014, with the amendments again being made by Chris Jesty. In 2014, it was agreed that the Society should however embark on a project to acquire a copy of every one of AW’s published items, the purpose of which was to try to ensure that a copy of his work was available for the future. We were not interested in which edition or impression was involved although the aim was to acquire a copy which was un-amended from his original publication. Publications ‘about AW’ were not included. However, where there was other material to which he had contributed in some way (e.g. a foreword, an introduction, or the inclusion of drawings which had not been reproduced in his other publications) we included these in our project. The intention was to donate the collection to the Cumbria Archive where it could be inspected and also used for research work.
